Here in Fairfax, we are lucky to have the Living/Dying Project, a community resource for people facing serious illness, grief, caregiving, and the end of life.
The Project was founded decades ago by teachers like Ram Dass, Stephen Levine, and Dale Borglum. Since then, it has quietly offered support to thousands of people who find themselves at the edge of life and loss.
What makes the Living/Dying Project unique is the way they offer free, volunteer-based spiritual support. This is not medical care, but the kind of steady, compassionate presence that helps people feel less alone. They also run support groups, workshops, and courses that invite us to meet death and dying with openness and courage.
Even though they are based here in Fairfax, many of their offerings are available online, so you don’t need to be in Marin to participate.
If you are curious, you can learn more on their website: livingdying.org or through the Marin HHS resource guide.
For many families I meet, the Living/Dying Project can be a beautiful complement to the work I do as a doula. It is a reminder that death is not something we need to face alone, and that there are communities willing to sit with us in the hardest moments.
